A Client List

Introduction

There are tons of different clients out there, all with different interfaces and features. Some are good, some of them are great, and some of them are just terrible! Some have tons of features, while others are just bare-bones clients, and if you ask ten people which client is best and why, you get ten very different answers.

This isn't a list of clients that favor one or another – read over this, and try to find which ones you like, and which you don't.

This List is Current As of March 2006.

BitTorrent – www.BitTorrent.com
This is the very first BitTorrent client ever, created by a man named Bram Cohen, and he wrote the BitTorrent protocol himself!

Azureus – www.Azureus.SourceForge.net
Azureus allows for many torrents to be uploading and downloading at the same time, gives you start/stop options for each torrent, a priority system, and instant updating action on what files you have, what pieces of what files you have, and what you need. You can also make torrents using Azureus.

There's also a Mac OSX version of Azureus available for downloading.

BitTornado – www.BitTornado.com
Holding many features, this client is based directly off of BitTorrent, the first client ever. It comes from 'The SHADOW's Experimental BitTorrent Client', and is a re-branding of that same client by The Shadow, who developed it.

Turbo Torrent – www.TurboTorrent.com
Turbo Torrent is a simple, but powerful P2P file-sharing freeware that is compatible with BitTorrent. It has a clean interface and is easy to use. You can download more then one torrent at a time, use a proxy within the client, and even limit speeds.

BitTorrent Plugin for eDonkey2000 v1.0 – www.Forum.eDonkey.Com/ViewTopic.php?t=67789
This is the release of the BitTorrent plugin for eDonkey, and unlike the previous versions, this is a beta version – not just a testers version anymore, but available to all.

Shareaza – www.Shareaza.SourceForge.net
There are tons of great features with the release of Shareaza 2.2, including a scheduler, and a review viewer. The help documents are extremely useful, and it performs extremely well on lower end computers.

BitComet – www.BitComet.com
BitComet has many features like proxy, port mapping, and chatting, and is a p2p file sharing that's fully compatible with BitTorrent.

Please note that some trackers have banned BitComet altogether because of the way it acts.

Burst! – www.Krypt.dyndns.org:81/torrent/index.phtml
Burst! is part of BitTorrents console, but isn't very popular at all. There really isn't much to say about it.

ABC – www.PingPong-ABC.SourceForge.Net
ABC is based on BitTornado, which is in turn based on BitTorrent. ABC isn't quite a bare-bones client, but it doesn't have as many features as some. It does what it needs to do, and for many people that's all they need.

BitLord – www.BitLord.com
Danger: This is often seen as a direct copy of BitComet, which has been banned by many trackers for the way it works. This client may also be banned by some.

BitLord is clean, easy to use, rather powerful, and has all of the features that the casual downloader needs.

uTorrent – www.uTorrent.com
uTorrent is an extremely popular, efficient, and feature-packed client for Windows, and it uses very little resources. It has anything that the casual and hardcore downloader needs, and can make the most out of your computer.

Bits on Wheels – www.BitsOnWheels.com
Bits on Wheels is the first completely Mac-dedicated client, and has no Windows counterpart. It is powerful, and unique, and many Mac users treasure it.

Transmission – www.Transmission.m0k.org
Transmission is a completely free client that was written from scratch using C, so it isn't based off of any other program. It is extremely efficient, and works only on Macs'.

Tomato Torrent – www.Sarwat.net/BitTorrent
The main goal of Tomato Torrent was to keep the BitTorrent and the Mac code completely separate, and it was success. It works well, is very efficient, and 'gets the job done'.
